Dhaka Slips Further in Global Livability Rankings: Challenges for Bangladesh's Capital

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has fallen two places in the global livability rankings, now standing at 168th out of 173 cities. This information comes from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a research arm of the influential UK-based magazine The Economist, which released its annual Global Livability Index on Wednesday.

Despite ongoing efforts to improve living conditions, Dhaka has not seen any significant enhancement in the quality of life for its residents. This year, Dhaka is ranked just above Karachi, Pakistan, and below Harare, Zimbabwe. The decline is mainly attributed to a decrease in the availability and quality of education.

The EIU's assessment covers five key indicators: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Dhaka scored 50 in stability, 41.7 in healthcare, 40.5 in culture and environment, 66.7 in education, and 26.8 in infrastructure.

Compared to last year, Dhaka’s overall position has deteriorated, making it the sixth least livable city globally. In contrast, Vienna, Austria’s capital, continues to hold the top spot as the most livable city in the world, followed by Copenhagen (Denmark) and Zurich (Switzerland). Melbourne (Australia) and Calgary (Canada) are also in the top five.

Interestingly, Kyiv, the capital of war-torn Ukraine, ranks three places above Dhaka at 165th, despite the ongoing conflict. At the bottom of the list, Damascus, the capital of Syria, ranks as the least livable city, followed by Tripoli (Libya), Algiers (Algeria), Lagos (Nigeria), and Karachi (Pakistan).

As Bangladesh continues to develop, addressing the challenges highlighted in the EIU’s report will be crucial for improving the livability of its capital city.
