Attack on Nurul Haq Nur Sparks Political Outcry in Dhaka,Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s political scene witnessed fresh turmoil on Thursday night after Nurul Haq Nur, the president of Gana Adhikar Parishad and a prominent youth leader, was seriously injured during a violent clash in Dhaka’s Kakrail area. The incident took place in front of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) central office around 8:15 p.m. (BST), where Nur and his party activists had gathered for a political demonstration.

“Bangladeshi youth leader Nurul Haq Nur injured during street protest in Kakrail area, Dhaka.”

According to witnesses, the peaceful program quickly turned chaotic when a confrontation broke out between Gana Adhikar Parishad supporters and local groups near the JaPa office. The clash escalated into heavy brick-throwing, shouting, and eventually a baton charge that left several people bloodied. Nurul Haq Nur, who has been a vocal critic of both the ruling and opposition parties, sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Eyewitness Accounts

Local shopkeepers and bystanders reported that the protest initially appeared calm. “Nur was speaking with his activists when suddenly a group began throwing stones,” said Rahim Uddin, a tea stall owner near the scene. “Within minutes, the entire street turned into a battlefield.”

Video footage circulating on social media shows Nur being pulled away by party members with blood on his face. His supporters claim that the law enforcement agencies not only failed to protect them but also participated in the assault.

Role of Law Enforcement

Gana Adhikar Parishad leaders alleged that members of the law enforcement agencies intervened with disproportionate force. General Secretary Rashed Khan told reporters, “We were preparing for a press briefing when police suddenly started baton-charging us. They directly targeted Nur, which proves the attack was pre-planned.”

However, police officials have not released an official statement as of Friday morning. Attempts to contact Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) representatives for clarification remained unanswered.

Political Reactions

The attack triggered a wave of outrage across Bangladesh’s political spectrum:

Hannan Masud, senior coordinator of the National Citizen Party, said, “An attack on Nur is essentially an attack on the spirit of last July’s uprising. This is not only a political crime but also a warning to democracy.”

Maulana Mamunul Haque, leader of Khelafat Majlish, condemned the incident as a “terrorist-style assault.” He warned that if no legal action is taken against those responsible, public anger could spiral out of control.

Prominent academic and interim government adviser Asif Nazrul also condemned the attack in a Facebook post, describing it as a “barbaric act that undermines hopes of peaceful political dialogue.”

These condemnations were echoed by several other political parties, student organizations, and rights groups. Calls for immediate nationwide protests and demonstrations have already started circulating.

Growing Concerns Over Political Violence

This attack on Nur is not an isolated incident. Over the past months, Bangladesh has seen a spike in street-level political clashes, particularly since the transitional government took charge earlier this year. Analysts note that the frequency of such incidents signals a fragile security environment and a lack of trust between political groups and law enforcement agencies.

Nurul Haq Nur, a former Dhaka University student leader, has often been at the center of political movements. Known for his fearless stance against corruption and authoritarian practices, he commands significant support among students and young voters. His repeated targeting raises questions about the country’s ability to ensure safety for dissenting voices.

Political analyst Dr. Farhana Kabir observed, “What happened to Nur reflects a deeper crisis of accountability. When young leaders are assaulted in broad daylight, it discourages new generations from engaging in politics. This is a blow to democratic culture.”

The Road Ahead

As Nur recovers in hospital, uncertainty looms over Bangladesh’s political future. His party has announced plans for continuous protests until justice is ensured. Meanwhile, opposition and civil society groups are demanding an independent investigation into the incident.

Citizens on social media have expressed anger, with hashtags like #JusticeForNur trending across platforms. Many fear that if accountability is not established quickly, such violence could escalate, deepening political divisions.

For now, Nurul Haq Nur’s condition is stable, but the symbolic weight of the attack has already shaken Bangladesh’s political landscape. The question remains: Will this incident be a turning point for greater unity and accountability, or just another chapter in the country’s long history of political violence?
