Bangladesh has taken a major step in regional diplomacy by joining a high-level peace and humanitarian mission aimed at helping Myanmar and the Rohingya refugees. Alongside Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, Bangladesh will send senior diplomats and aid officials as part of an ASEAN-led initiative. The mission will focus on reducing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State and ensuring aid reaches displaced communities.

The two countries also signed new agreements on defence cooperation, trade, and energy infrastructure development—highlighting a stronger bilateral relationship.
For Bangladesh, this move is significant because it is already hosting over one million Rohingya refugees, with around 150,000 arriving in just the past year and a half. Officials say the peace mission will help address the root causes of the crisis while strengthening regional stability.
Human rights organisations welcomed the initiative but stressed the need for real commitments from Myanmar’s leadership to allow safe return and protection of displaced people.
