Introduction
On May 20–21, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh made aviation history by flying solo nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean—from New York to Paris—in his aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis. The 33½-hour journey inspired a new era in air travel and proved that long-distance flights were possible.
Who Was Charles Lindbergh?
Born: February 4, 1902, Detroit, Michigan, USA.
Early Career: Barnstorming pilot, performing aerial stunts.
U.S. Army Air Service pilot in 1924.
Air mail pilot between St. Louis and Chicago.
Lindbergh’s determination and flying skills set him apart from other aviators of his time.
The Orteig Prize and the Dream
In 1919, French-born New York hotel owner Raymond Orteig announced a $25,000 prize for the first nonstop flight between New York and Paris. Many pilots attempted, but bad weather, technical failures, and crashes prevented success.
Lindbergh saw an opportunity and began preparing for the challenge.
Designing the Spirit of St. Louis
With funding from St. Louis businessmen, Lindbergh commissioned a special long-range aircraft—the Spirit of St. Louis. Key features included:
Extra fuel tanks for over 3,600 miles range.
Single-engine monoplane design.
Light weight for efficiency.
On May 20, 1927, Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field, Long Island.
The Flight Across the Atlantic
No radio, only maps and a compass for navigation.
Extreme fatigue, cold weather, and fog made the journey dangerous.
Flight Time: 33½ hours.
Distance: About 3,600 miles (5,800 km).
Lindbergh stayed awake the entire time, fighting drowsiness and poor visibility.
Landing in Paris – A Hero’s Welcome
On May 21, 1927, Lindbergh landed at Le Bourget Aerodrome near Paris. Over 100,000 people rushed to greet him. The crowd carried him on their shoulders, celebrating his success.
