Gaza City, August 11, 2025 — Anas al-Sharif, a well-known journalist for Al Jazeera, has been killed along with several of his colleagues in what witnesses describe as a direct attack by Israeli forces.

The incident happened during intense fighting in Gaza City. Local sources say al-Sharif was reporting live from the area when an Israeli strike hit the building where he and other journalists were working.

The killing has triggered strong condemnation worldwide. Governments, international media organizations, and human rights groups have called the attack “a dangerous assault on press freedom” and demanded an independent investigation.

Al Jazeera released an official statement saying the targeted killing of its staff is a violation of international law and a clear attempt to silence reporting from the ground. The network has vowed to continue covering the war despite the risks.

In several capitals, including Doha, London, and New York, protests broke out in front of Israeli embassies. Protesters held banners reading “Journalism is not a crime” and “Protect the press.”

The United Nations has announced it will discuss the incident in an emergency Security Council meeting later this week. Rights groups are urging the UN to impose stronger measures to protect journalists working in conflict zones.
